About this book

Roy Lothrop Shurtleff (1887-1985) was born in Nevada City, California. His parents were Samuel Matthew Shurtleff and Charlotte Louise Aseneth Avery. He married Hazle Clifton Lawton (1890-1948), daughter of Frank Houghteling Lawton and Francis Marion Rogers, in 1913 in Berkeley, California. The earliest Shurtleff to arrive in America was William Shirtlef (1624-1666). He was one of the first settlers of Plymouth, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Lettice (b. 1636), daughter of Thomas Lettice, in 1655. William and Elizabeth had three sons, all born in Massachusetts. The Lawton immigrant ancestor of this family was, Thomas Lawton (1614-ca. 1681) of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. He was the son of George Lawton and Isabell Smith. He came to America with his brother, George, ca. 1637. He married Elizabeth Salsburie and Mrs. Grace (Parsons) Bailey. He died at Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
